Tenant Photo Exhibit

HTEP has produced an exhibit of tenants’ photos which show various repairs and maintenance issues. This traveling exhibit is meant to educate the community about the conditions which some tenants are forced to live in, as well as helping tenants to learn how to address their problems.

Accompanying the exhibit is information regarding repairs and maintenance issues and the legal process for tenants to follow to get these problems fixed. The exhibit is made of three foam core boards and measures approximately seven and a half (7.5) feet long by three (3) feet high.

If you are interested in showing this exhibit in your organization, please contact us.

Hamilton Tenant Helpline

This is the major project that the Hamilton Tenant Education Project is working on currently. It is modeled on the Federation of Metro Tenants’ Associations’ HotLine. The Federation and the Hotline are funded by the City of Toronto.

Multi-Residential Tax Rates

Most Hamilton Tenants pay property taxes. Landlords include these costs in the rent. A study of this matter indicates that 18% of your rent goes toward property taxes. Currently, in Hamilton, the Multi-residential rate is 2.74 times the Residential rate.

The Province of Ontario recommends that these two rates be much closer but that the onus is on city council to implement that recommendation. If these rates were the same, City officials say that, on average, it would mean a reduction in Tenants’ rents throughout the city of $100 a month.

For more information on this matter contact the Governor's Green Tenants’ Association at ggtadundas@gmail.com or Tenant-Ed@housinghelpcentre.ca
