If you are
having problems getting your landlord to
repair and/or maintain your rental unit
follow these steps:
-
Give your
landlord a written request to fix the
problem and keep a copy of your request.
-
Document the
problem with pictures, videotape and/or
witnesses.
-
Call the
Standards & Licensing Department, Health
Department or Fire Department.
-
Get a copy of
their report from the Clerk’s Office on the
second floor at City Hall through the
Freedom of Information Act. There is a small
fee.
-
If your
landlord still does not fix the problem, you
can apply to the Ontario Rental Housing
Tribunal (ORHT). The ORHT is a tribunal that
rules on disputes between rental tenants and
landlords.
-
You can
subpoena the inspector to appear as a witness
at the ORHT.
