Supportive
housing generally refers to housing for
individuals who need assistance with their
activities of daily living, providing support
and services to those individuals, enabling
them to live in the community. Different
projects may have individual admission
criteria but potential residents should
require some type of attendant care. Most
projects have subsidized rent and usually
offer life skills training and transitional
training.
The housing may be Supported Independent
Living (SIL) which are self contained units
that include attendant services (dependant
upon the level of need) and may include life
skill support, housekeeping, and other support
services.
Congregate Living environments are also
available through some organizations.
Residents in this situation live independently
in a shared setting, with attendant services
available (depending upon the level of need).
Services may also include life skills training
and housekeeping.
Other services are also available in the
Hamilton area for individuals and families who
require respite care, outreach attendant or
support services. This may be provided by the
organizations offering supportive housing, but
there are also agencies that provide these
services separately. These may be subsidized
services or fee for service. Another option is
host family programs where individuals live
with a family who provides support.
