Use this brochure as a checklist
to:
? Inspect possible rental accommodation
? Enforce your right to safe, clean housing
? Let your landlord know his/her responsibility to repair your housing
? Give specific information when contacting the Building or Health Department
? Argue your case at the Ontario Rental

Property
? Kept free from garbage, debris, or conditions which are a fire, accident
or health hazards (9)1
Yard
? Grass is cut 13(6)
? Dead trees removed or maintained in a state which is not hazardous 13(8)
? No heavy undergrowth or dangerous plants 13(3)

Locks
? Every lock that is designed to work with a key or combination in good

Lighting
? Permanent lighting is maintained 25(1)
? Lighting in all rooms, exits, entrances and stairways 25(1,2)
Room
A habitable room is any room in a unit used or intended to be used for
living, eating, sleeping or cooking.
? Rooms are habitable 29(1)
? Living room, dining room and/or kitchen has a height of 7 feet over
at least ¾ of the floor 29(2)
? Bedroom has an average clear height of 7 feet over at least ½
of the floor 29(2)
Kitchen
? Sink with splash back which is water and grease resistant 23(1)a
? Work surface which is at least 8 square feet and impervious to grease
and water 23(1)b
? Cupboards have at least 30 cubic feet of space for storage 23(1)c
? Sufficient space to accommodate a cooking range or countertop cooking
unit 23(1)d
Ventilation
? Washrooms ventilated to outside 26(2)
? Basement, cellar, or unheated crawl space adequately ventilated 26(6)
? Garages maintained so to prevent gas fumes and carbon monoxide from
entering 27(1)
? Every habitable room shall have an opening for natural ventilation from
outside 26(1)
Plumbing
? Does not leak or freeze 10(1)

Water
Drainage
? No pooling water 15(3)
? No entrance of water into basement or cellar on the property or neighbouring

? Roof drainage not on sidewalk, stairs, street or neighbouring properties

? Receptacles provided for weekly garbage removal 28(1)
? The garbage chute in a multiple dwelling unit cannot be cut off 28(5)b
? If no chute, occupants are not required to deliver the garbage to the
ground floor, basement or parking lot 28(5)cii instead, a daily collection
procedure from each floor must be provided by the management 28(5)ciii
